Wm. T ‘Pop’ Sierke
In 1946, the seeds of what would grow into Gothic Arch Greenhouses were planted by our visionary grandfather, Wm. T ‘Pop’ Sierke, and father, Wm. H. ‘Bill’ Sierke Sr. They established "Trans-Sphere Trading Corporation," an import/export company that would lay the foundation for a lasting legacy in the horticultural industry. As the landscape of agriculture began to change in the 1950s, spurred by the flourishing ornamental nurseries around us, our focus shifted towards specialized horticultural products. It was then that we embarked on a journey to import peat moss directly from the bogs of Germany to the heart of the Southeast—Mobile, Alabama—catering to the burgeoning needs of ornamental growers.

Our foray into the horticultural market expanded as we began to import an array of related products. Reed mats from Austria, kelp meal from Norway, and essential tools like burlap and pinning nails became part of our offering, each carefully chosen to enhance the growth and preparation of field-grown stock. This period of growth was characterized by our budding relationship with State Agricultural Extension Services and Agricultural Colleges, highlighting the pressing need for affordable, functional greenhouses that could serve not just the commercial sector but the educational and hobbyist communities as well. W. H 'Bill' Sierke Sr. served as a guest Horticulture Consultant to the National Department of Vocational Agricultural Education. He was asked to develop a comprehensive Horticulture Training Center that could serve both small and large student enrollment. Hence the Five-Phase Horticulture Training Center was created (See Above).

Driven by a desire to meet this need, we delved into the exploration of various greenhouse designs and materials. Our dedication culminated in the adoption of the Gothic Arch design, inspired by Wm. T. Sierke's model, known for its strength, durability, and aesthetic appeal. Our initial models, though modest, set the stage for what would become a hallmark of quality and innovation. Transitioning from the use of redwood to the more sustainable and locally sourced heart cypress, we demonstrated our commitment to environmental stewardship without compromising on quality.
For over 78 years, Gothic Arch Greenhouses has stood at the forefront of the horticultural industry, driven by a passion for excellence and a dedication to our customers. Our journey from a small import/export business to a leading provider of top-quality greenhouses is a testament to the enduring vision of our founders and the generations that followed. Today, with Wm. H. ‘Buzz’ Sierke Jr. at the helm, we continue to innovate, offering a range of greenhouses that cater to enthusiasts and professionals alike, backed by friendly, knowledgeable customer support and hassle-free shipping.
As we reflect on our storied past, we are filled with gratitude for the trust and support of our customers and the communities we serve.
