Mid-summer is one of the most demanding times of year for a greenhouse. Longer days, intense sunlight, high humidity, and rapidly growing plants can place extra stress on crops and equipment. A proactive maintenance routine can help you maintain a more stable growing environment, reduce avoidable plant stress, and keep your greenhouse operating efficiently.
This guide focuses on the most important summer tasks: cooling, ventilation, shade, irrigation, pest prevention, equipment inspection, and crop care.
1. Monitor Heat and Humidity
Greenhouse temperatures can rise quickly on sunny days, even when outdoor temperatures feel manageable. Check conditions at plant level rather than relying only on a wall-mounted thermostat.
Check temperatures daily
Monitor morning, midday, and late-afternoon temperatures. Digital sensors with high- and low-memory make it easier to track changing conditions.
Watch humidity levels
High humidity can encourage fungal disease, while very low humidity may increase plant water loss. Balance ventilation and irrigation accordingly.
- Place sensors near the crop canopy and away from direct sunlight.
- Record unusually hot periods and adjust ventilation or shading before plants show stress.

2. Inspect Ventilation and Cooling Systems

Remove dust and plant debris, confirm shutters open fully, and listen for unusual vibration or motor noise.
Evaporative cooling pads

Circulation fans
Confirm that horizontal airflow fans are unobstructed and positioned to move air throughout the crop area without directly blasting plants.
Controls and thermostats
Test thermostats, humidistats, vents, louvers, and automatic controls. Replace damaged wiring or malfunctioning sensors promptly.
3. Use Shade Cloth Effectively
Shade cloth can reduce solar heat gain and protect sensitive crops from intense summer light. The appropriate shade percentage depends on the crop, glazing material, greenhouse orientation, and local climate.

- Inspect shade cloth for tears, loose fasteners, stretched seams, and wind damage.
- Keep cloth properly tensioned while allowing enough flexibility for wind movement.

Place crops with similar moisture requirements together to reduce overwatering and improve irrigation consistency.
5. Strengthen Pest and Disease Prevention
Warm greenhouse conditions can accelerate pest reproduction. Inspect plants frequently so small problems can be managed before they spread throughout the structure.
- Check the undersides of leaves and new growth for aphids, whiteflies, mites, thrips, and scale.
