Glenn deGruy began working in wood 25 years ago under the tutelage of Robert Reid. Since then he has taught his son, Rob to contribute to the family business. Wife Margaret, a well known artist, assists in the design process, special finishes and custom painted furniture. Together they hand-craft one of a kind furniture for homes, business and churches.

The deGruys built the shop they work in about fifteen years ago. The cypress board and batten barn looks as though it has been here for hundreds of years. Their shop is located in Western Mobile County, on the Gulf Coast of Alabama.

Along with building furniture, the deGruys also grow a variety of trees. Live Oaks,Japanese Maples, and cypress are a few of the species of trees available. They also have many different types of bamboo as well.

The deGruys have a variety of tools and machines that are as individual as the furniture they make. Many different varieties of wood in the construction process. Some of which are reclaimed wood such as old heart pine. Others are native hardwoods and others are tropical woods from plantations.

Some of their work can only be done using a vacuum bag. This method of veneer pressing allows them to be versatile in the shapes and designs they make. Using this press assures flat stable furniture that is of the highest quality.

The finishing process that the deGruys use is one that has been passed down from one craftsman to another. It is this procedure that makes each of the deGruys pieces so striking. First the unfinished wood is water stained with an anilined dye stain. Next, several coats of sanding sealer is sprayed onto the piece and then sanded. Third, on oil based glaze is applied to the wood. Over this, the deGruys spray multiple coats of nitrocellulose lacquer until the surface grain is filled. This is followed by a final coat of lacquer with a flatting agent. Finally the piece is wet-sanded and rubbed with steel wool to achieve a satin sheen. Although lengthy, these are the steps to a beautiful finish that is very long lasting and durable.
